Sea Kayaking Educational Guide Course, Norway

Not Offered in 2010

The Educational Sea Kayaking expedition style courses are designed to develop and refine sea kayaking and outdoor expedition skills. This knowledge will prepare the participants for working as outdoor educators and guides in a coastal environment. A two day Wilderness First Aid course (WMI of NOLS) is usually included. Any outdoor program, organisation or youth camp can contract us for an Educational course.

Our basic curriculum emphasizes safety and judgment, expedition skills, outdoor living skills, technical sea kayaking skills, environmental awareness, wilderness first aid and Leave No Trace principles.

COURSE GOALS:
To provide the participant with a combined Sea Kayaking and Camping Experience.
To develop skills for working as guides in a coastal setting.
To learn and further develop Sea kayaking and Traveling skills.
To learn and further develop Outdoor Living and Expedition skills.
To become certified Leave No Trace trainers.
To gain experience in different ways of teaching, camping, cooking and being in the outdoors.
To have fun and enjoy the outdoors together.
To become confident Wilderness First Aid care givers.

EXPEDITION FORMAT:
This course is a self-reliant expedition that travels by double and single kayaks. At times during the course we will venture along an inhabited coastline where evacuations to modern facilities can be difficult and may take several days.

A wide variety of topics will be addressed in lecture style, discussions and practical exercises. A successful participant on this expedition is a person who wants to further develop their kayaking, outdoor living and leadership skills. Our instructors / leaders encourage each participant to take an active role in learning.

Throughout the course the participants will live outdoors, help cooking meals for the whole group and care for themselves and other expedition members. Learning to be a contributing member of an expedition can be a challenge with immense personal rewards. Leadership and teamwork are stressed throughout the course. Living together in the outdoors for an extended period of time often brings out the “true colors” in each of us. It is an invaluable experience for people interested in pursuing work as outdoor guides.
