<image:title>Bios - Lena Conlan - Lena Conlan</image:title>
<image:caption>Co-founder Lena is a proud Swede. In her wanderings, the U.S. has become her primary home for the past 35 years. She has been involved in outdoor activities since childhood, with her family running Camp Sparreviken—a YMCA sailing and canoeing camp on the Swedish west coast—for many years. Lena holds a teaching degree from the University of Umeå in Sweden. Her passion for travel and adventure brought her to the U.S. in 1985, where she began teaching for NOLS (the National Outdoor Leadership School). After years of coordinating the NOLS Sea Kayaking program across four countries, it was a natural step for her to return to Scandinavia and launch her own adventure business. For 20 years, Lena has been the mastermind behind the trips and expeditions offered by Crossing Latitudes. A Wilderness EMT, Lena has also been a member of the Bozeman Search & Rescue team and has taught for NOLS Wilderness Medicine since 2000. Anyone who knows Lena, speaks of her boundless energy, her planning skills, her practical and easily accessible approach to complex topics, her masterful storytelling and sound effects, as well as her warmth and compassion. It is no exaggeration to say that she has changed many lives through her instruction and humanity.</image:caption>

Tim and Lena met in 1986 while teaching sea kayaking expeditions in Baja California, Mexico for NOLS. Tim worked for NOLS as an outdoor educator since the late 70’s. During that time he’d taught just about every skill type NOLS offered, from caving and climbing to kayaking and skiing. Tim developed the NOLS Sea Kayaking Instructor course and authored their instructor manual. Tim also helped to create materials and teaching practices for the Federally sponsored conservation program “Leave No Trace”. After guiding for most of his life Tim is now happy by spending more time in Bozeman, Montana, USA. He loves skiing and biking in the mountains. Bridger Bowl Ski Area is his “second home”. <image:caption>Fred grew up in Finland's westernmost region, the archipelago by the Gulf of Bothnia. This diverse, four-season landscape shaped his deep appreciation for nature and laid the foundation for his wilderness skills. “We used firewood to heat our homes and whether it was taking down trees, or chopping wood – spending time outdoors was always a been a big part of my life. Interacting with the natural world is the most rewarding endeavour I have taken on.” Fred has worked full-time as an Outdoor Educator and NOLS Instructor for several years, and teaching for NOLS Wilderness Medicine was a natural next step—one we’re grateful he took! For Fred, a rewarding part of his work is building community, meeting great people and new colleagues, and empowering students. He also appreciates the depth of the field and the endless opportunities to develop his skills, sharpen his strengths, and keep learning. Fred has previously served as a leader and caretaker at a summer camp for disabled youth. He chose public service over mandatory military service and is currently studying Crisis Psychology at the University of Åbo in Finland, focusing on psychological intervention, crisis debriefing for rescue workers and victims, PTSD prevention, and managing the psychological aspects of severe trauma."</image:caption>

Inspired to contribute and serve better, she is currently continuing her education as a wilderness paramedic and has applied her skills in refugee camps, hospital placements, as well as in backcountry settings. Passionate about teaching, Ming believes it is one of the most effective ways to keep learning and stay grounded. She considers practising medicine a privilege. Stephan hopes that by enabling others to discover and fall in love with the great outdoors– he also inspires them to protect these places in their day-to-day life. In the end, he’d argue, he works on sustainable development after all! After adding the Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician (WEMT) qualifications to his growing list of achievements, Stephan is currently studying Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change Adaptation in the hopes of applying his mountain-honed risk management skills in other, no less relevant areas.
